Why You Shouldn’t Skip the Sauna in August
If you’re serious about training, this one’s for you.
Most people put the sauna away when summer hits.
It’s already hot outside, so why add more heat?
But if you’re serious about training, recovery, and building resilience, August may be one of the best times to keep the habit going.
Heat Is a Training Stimulus
When your body enters the sauna, it responds to the heat much like it responds to other forms of physical stress.
Your heart rate increases. Blood vessels dilate. Blood flow shifts toward the skin to help your body release heat, while sweating helps regulate your core temperature.
With repeated exposure, your body becomes better at managing that stress.
This process is called heat acclimation.
Over time, regular heat exposure can help your body become more efficient at cooling itself and handling elevated temperatures—which can be especially relevant for people who train outdoors or exercise in the summer.
The Benefits Go Beyond Cooling
Sauna use isn't just about getting comfortable with the heat.
A 2022 study published in the American Journal of Physiology found that regular sauna use was associated with improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and reductions in systolic blood pressure, independent of exercise.
That makes the sauna an interesting addition to an already active lifestyle—not a replacement for training, but another form of controlled stress that your body can adapt to.
And there’s another reason to stay consistent: adaptation takes repetition.
Just like you don't build strength from one workout, you don't develop heat acclimation from one sauna session.
So, Should You Skip the Sauna in August?
Not necessarily.
In fact, if you're already training regularly, continuing your sauna routine through the summer may help your body stay accustomed to heat stress rather than starting over when temperatures rise.
August isn't a reason to stop.
It's a reason to stay consistent.
Your training doesn't take a summer vacation. Your recovery routine doesn't have to either.
Keep showing up. Keep adapting. Keep the heat.
